ZIM vs AUS: Zimbabwe Stuns Australia! Riyan Parag is New RR Captain & Chinnaswamy Returns

Zimbabwe win by 23 runs vs Australia T20 World Cup 2026 and Riyan Parag appointed as Rajasthan Royals captain
Colombo/Bengaluru, Feb 13, 2026: If you think you’ve seen it all in the T20 World Cup 2026, today’s events at the R. Premadasa Stadium will make you question everything. In what experts are calling the "Shock of the Decade," Zimbabwe has defeated a full-strength (though injury-hit) Australian side by 23 runs.

But the drama doesn't stop in Colombo. Back in India, the IPL 2026 season has just seen its first major leadership shift, and a legendary stadium is finally opening its gates again.

The Giant Slain: How Zimbabwe Conquered Australia

The headlines belong to Zimbabwe today. After 19 long years, the Chevrons have finally tasted victory against Australia on the world stage. Batting first on a slowing Colombo pitch, Zimbabwe posted a formidable 169/2.

The hero of the hour was the 23-year-old Brian Bennett, who played a masterclass in anchoring an innings under pressure. Bennett’s unbeaten 64 off 56 balls was perfectly supported by a late surge from captain *Sikandar Raza (25 off 13)**. According to Outlook India, Zimbabwe's tactical discipline in the death overs made the difference.

Blessing Muzarabani’s Fire vs Australian Collapse

Chasing 170, Australia looked like a shadow of their former selves. With Mitchell Marsh missing due to a groin injury and Marcus Stoinis walking off mid-game with a thumb injury, the Aussies were on the backfoot. Blessing Muzarabani (4/17) produced a spell for the ages, removing Josh Inglis and Travis Head in quick succession.

Despite a fighting knock from Matt Renshaw, Australia were bundled out for 146. As highlighted by Hindustan Times, this upset has thrown Group B wide open, putting Australia’s Super 8 qualification in serious jeopardy.

IPL 2026: The "Riyan Parag Era" at Rajasthan Royals

While Colombo celebrated, the IPL world was stunned by an official announcement. Rajasthan Royals (RR) have officially named Riyan Parag as their new captain for the IPL 2026 season.

Following the blockbuster trade that saw Sanju Samson move to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the Royals have decided to back their "homegrown" talent. Parag, who is only 24, has been with the franchise since 2019 and reportedly impressed the think-tank during his stint as stand-in captain last season. As per ABP News, this move signals a major transition for the franchise as they aim to end their title drought since the inaugural 2008 season.

Chinnaswamy Stadium: The Return of the RCB Roar

In a development that has Bengaluru fans emotional, the Karnataka Cabinet has finally cleared the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to host IPL 2026 matches. The stadium had been suspended since the tragic stampede in June 2025.

As reported by The Times of India, the stadium will operate with a capped capacity of 35,000 fans and implement strict safety measures recommended by the Justice D’Cunha Committee. This means RCB will finally defend their title on their true home turf starting March 26.
